Most wardrobes are half empty in one direction and overflowing in another, because they are built around an assumption about what people own.
Count What You Actually Have
Hanging versus folded is the ratio that matters, and it surprises most people.
Standard wardrobes assume a great deal of hanging space and one shelf. Most people own considerably more folded clothing than hanging, so the rail is half used and the shelf is a pile.
Counting before buying anything tells you whether you need more rail, more shelves or more drawers.
What Hangs and What Folds
- Hanging: shirts, dresses, jackets, trousers, anything that creases
- Folded: knitwear, which stretches out of shape on a hanger
- Folded: jeans, T-shirts, underwear, sportswear
- Which for most people means more drawer than rail
- And most wardrobes are built the other way round

Use the Vertical Space
The gap under hanging shirts is the largest wasted volume in most wardrobes.
Shirts hang around a metre; the rail is frequently two metres from the floor. A drawer unit, a shoe rack or stacked boxes underneath reclaims all of it.
A second rail under the first doubles hanging capacity for short items.
File, Do Not Stack
Folded clothing stacked means only the top item is visible, so the same three things are worn constantly.
Folding into rectangles and standing them on edge, filed rather than piled, makes everything visible at once. Capacity increases and the whole drawer gets used.
Seasonal Rotation
Roughly half of most wardrobes is out of season.
Two boxes per category, one out and one stored, swapped at the turn of the season, effectively doubles capacity without buying furniture.
Everything clean and completely dry before storing. Clothing stored with body oils develops permanent marks and attracts moths.
Moths
They eat natural fibres, particularly wool and cashmere, and they favour soiled items in undisturbed storage.
Clean storage, sealed containers for wool, and disturbing the space occasionally are the practical measures.
